Assistant Practitioner

An opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic individual to join our In-Patient Orthopaedic therapy team. The successful candidate will (on completion of the required competencies) be delivering care within the Orthopaedic In-Patient Therapy Team based on the Orthopaedic Unit at Rotherham Hospital. This will include assessment and treatment of elective and trauma patients with a variety of orthopaedic conditions.

The successful candidate will Deliver high quality, compassionate care for patients with orthopaedic conditions. Provide assessment and treatment tailored to the individual needs of the patient Be responsible for undertaking administrative and housekeeping tasks within the department. Applicants must: Possess a relevant foundation degrees or NVQ Level 3 in Diagnostic and Therapeutic Care or equivalent with additional relevant experience Have a good knowledge and understanding of Orthopaedic conditions and rehabilitation Have excellent team work skills Demonstrate good communication skills, including IT literacy Demonstrate good organisational skills Be able to use their initiative appropriately Be committed to personal development Have flexibility to allow for participation in extended working hours which includes weekday evenings and weekends.

Main duties of the job

To undertake initial clinical assessment of orthopaedic patients within agreed parameters including post-operative neurovascular assessments- To progress and modify treatments up to level of discharge, following training and guidance from qualified physiotherapy and occupational therapy staff-

Directly providing treatment/ rehabilitation to a patient or group of patients

Assessment for and delivery of treatment/rehabilitation packages of care

Deliver and install required equipment identified from assessments

Assess the environment and educate the patient as necessary as part of assessment. To include assessment of a patients own home

Supervision and assessment of patient/s undertaking a therapy/rehabilitation programme, including activities of daily living

Assisting in the personal care needs of patients as required

Identify and assess equipment suitability and provide instruction.

To be responsible for equipment used in carrying out duties, adhere to Trust and departmental policy and ensure the safe use of equipment by others through teaching and training

To be responsible for maintaining own competency and self-development through Active involvement in the PDR process

Active involvement in the in-service training programme

Maintaining awareness and up to date knowledge as appropriate for specialist area

Maintenance and development of clinical skills and apply knowledge of evidence-based practice within designated areas.

Essential

• Provides learning and development to other professionals within own work area
• Evidence of up to date continuing professional development within Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy

Experience

Essential

• Up to date documented evidence of CPD relevant to clinical area
• Experience of working within a multi-professional team

Desirable

• Experience of working within a Physiotherapy

IT Skills

• Demonstrates skills & ability in use of computer packages on a regular basis

Communication and Relationships

Essential

• Able to present and receive information within a multi professional team.
• Ability to convey sensitive information in an empathetic manner to patients/clients, relative/carers and staff.

• Skills and ability to motivate and support others

Qualifications

Essential

• Relevant foundation degree or NVQ level 3 in Diagnostic and Therapeutic Care or equivalent with additional relevant experience
• Due to the nature of the role it is essential that applicants are able to travel independently across the county and have access to a suitable vehicle for business purposes. If necessary, adjustments can be considered in accordance with the Equality Act 2010

Knowledge

Essential

• Understanding of the importance of Health and Safety in the workplace
• Understanding of the risk assessment process
• Understanding of the role of Physiotherapy in the rehabilitation and management of musculoskeletal / orthopaedic conditions.
• Knowledge and understanding in rehabilitation and exercise
• Demonstrates knowledge of equipment available and able to assess and fit where applicable
• Knowledge of Clinical Governance and implications for patient care
• Able to recognise when guidance and support is required

Desirable

• Awareness and understanding of relevant health and Social Care legislation

Physical/Practical

Essential

• Able to demonstrate advanced patient assessment skills
• Ability to utilise technology for the recording and collection of data and to support clinical care
• Produce timely, accurate written/electronic records and documents.
