About the role

Position Title: Manufacturing Engineer - UK

Reports To: Manufacturing Manager - UK

Location: Crawley, West Sussex, UK

Type: On-Site, Full-Time, Salaried

Position Summary:

The Manufacturing Engineer plays a key role in supporting Leo Cancer Care's UK manufacturing operation by improving manufacturability, driving cost reduction, and ensuring production issues are resolved quickly and effectively.

Working closely with Manufacturing, Engineering, Procurement, Installations and Quality, this role is responsible for bridging product design and manufacturing execution. The successful candidate will lead value engineering initiatives, support Design for Manufacture (DFM), resolve production line challenges, and work directly with suppliers to improve quality, cost and manufacturability.

This is a hands-on engineering role requiring regular presence on the factory floor, strong technical capability, and the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with external suppliers. The role is based in Crawley and will require regular UK and some international supplier visits as required.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Drive continuous improvement across UK manufacturing processes, improving quality, efficiency and throughput.
  • Lead Value Engineering (VE) initiatives to reduce product cost whilst maintaining quality, safety and performance.
  • Identify and resolve manufacturing line stoppages and technical production issues to minimise downtime.
  • Work collaboratively with the Engineering team throughout product development to ensure robust Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
  • Develop manufacturing solutions for new products, engineering changes and production improvements.
  • Support Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) by assessing manufacturing impact and implementing production changes.
  • Design, specify, maintain and improve manufacturing tooling, fixtures, jigs and assembly aids.
  • Work directly with suppliers to improve manufacturability, quality, lead time and cost through regular supplier visits and technical collaboration.
  • Provide technical support for machining, fabrication, electrical assembly and mechanical assembly activities.
  • Contribute to the creation and maintenance of manufacturing documentation including work instructions, assembly procedures and standard operating procedures.
  • Support root cause investigations using structured problem-solving techniques and implement effective corrective actions.
  • Work closely with Procurement to identify alternative manufacturing methods, materials and suppliers that improve value.
  • Support production readiness for New Product Introduction (NPI) activities.
  • Promote Lean Manufacturing principles and drive waste reduction initiatives throughout production.
  • Ensure manufacturing processes comply with company quality standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Support other Operations functions as required and take a hands-on approach toward meeting departmental objectives.
  • Represent the manufacturing department as required in cross functional meetings like non-conformances review, design reviews etc..
  • Qualifications & Skills:

    Essential:

    • Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Mechanical, Manufacturing or Production Engineering.
    • Demonstrable experience as a Manufacturing Engineer within a precision engineering or regulated manufacturing environment.
    • Strong understanding of Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
    • Experience with value engineering and cost reduction programs.
    • Proven experience supporting machining, sheet metal fabrication and electromechanical assemblies.
    • Ability to interpret mechanical drawings, cable drawings, electrical schematics and Bills of Materials.
  • SolidWorks experience.
  • Experience using ERP/MRP systems.
  • Strong analytical and structured problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Full UK driving license and willingness to travel to suppliers within the UK and internationally.
  • Desirable:

    • Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma experience.
    • Medical device or other regulated industry experience.
    • Knowledge of machining, welding, fabrication, sheet metal and cable assembly processes.
    • Experience designing fixtures and tooling.
    • Understanding of APQP, PFMEA or Process Validation.
