About the role

The Vacancy

We are now looking for an Advanced Research Engineer to join our Engineering Design Group, focusing on hydrogen and alternative energy systems.

The opportunity

This is an exciting, hands-on engineering opportunity to play a key role in the development and delivery of next-generation energy systems. Working across the full project lifecycle, from feasibility and concept development through FEED and detailed design to commissioning and delivery, you will contribute to innovative projects that are helping shape the future of sustainable energy.

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer with a strong process engineering bias and proven experience in complex industrial systems. You will be involved in the design and integration of technologies including hydrogen production plants, pressurised pipework systems, and alternative fuel solutions such as ammonia and methanol. The role requires practical experience of FEED engineering, preparation and review of PFDs and P&IDs, equipment specifications, and system integration, together with a sound understanding of process safety and risk assessments, including HAZOP, ATEX, and DSEAR.

Working within a multidisciplinary engineering team, you will undertake technical analysis, develop engineering solutions, and support project delivery from concept through to implementation. You will collaborate closely with customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholders to ensure designs are safe, efficient, and fit for purpose, helping to bring cutting-edge technologies into real-world operation and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Delivering high-quality technical outputs to meet customer requirements, budgets and timelines
  • Designing and developing systems using CAD, 2D schematics and 3D modelling
  • Supporting and leading elements of projects, including acting as Technical Lead on smaller work packages
  • Working on front-end engineering design, including calculations and system specification
  • Designing pressurised systems and balance of plant solutions
  • Collaborating with cross-disciplinary teams (mechanical, electrical, process engineers)
  • Supporting innovation by developing new technical capabilities and research initiatives
  • Contributing to continuous improvement and safety documentation

  • Essential

    What we’re looking for

    • Degree in Engineering (or equivalent)
    • Experience delivering hydrogen or alternative energy projects
    • Strong capability in CAD modelling, simulation and engineering drawings
    • Experience designing pressurised pipework systems and complex engineering systems
    • Understanding of system integration and safety studies (e.g. HAZOP, ATEX, DSEAR)
    • Knowledge of P&IDs, PFDs and multidisciplinary engineering documentation
    • Ability to manage projects across the full product life-cycle (TRL/MRL awareness)
    • Problem-solving mindset with a hands-on, practical approach

    Desirable

    • Experience with Siemens NX or SolidWorks
    • Knowledge of modular or containerised plant design
    • Exposure to renewable technologies and alternative fuels
    • Working towards professional registration

What Will Make You Stand Out

    • Ability to work in fast-paced, evolving project environments
    • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
    • A collaborative mindset with a passion for innovation
    • Flexibility to work across a variety of engineering challenges

    Why join MTC?

    • Work on cutting-edge hydrogen and clean energy technologies
    • Be part of a nationally recognised innovation hub
    • Access to world-class facilities and equipment
  • Flexible, hybrid working model
  • Competitive benefits including Vitality healthcare, pension and more
  • Opportunities for career growth and multidisciplinary development
