About The Role

An exciting opportunity for a Clinical Fellow in Spinal Cord Medicine Rehabilitation at Mid Yorkshire Teaching Trust (MYTT) on a fixed term basis for 12 months, full time, although less than full time applications will be considered.

These posts are not recognised UK training posts. However, the post-holders will have a named supervisor and be supported in undertaking scheduled educational opportunities within the Trust and specialties.

Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust (MYTT) provides acute and community services to approximately 650,000 people across Wakefield, Kirklees, and surrounding areas. The Trust operates from Pinderfields Hospital, Dewsbury and District Hospital, and Pontefract Hospital, delivering integrated, patient-centered care across hospital and community settings.

The Trust is committed to delivering high-quality, safe, and compassionate care, with a strong emphasis on multidisciplinary working, service improvement, and partnership across the West Yorkshire Integrated Care System.

The Yorkshire Regional Spinal Injuries Centre based in Wakefield at MYTT serves a catchment area of over 5 million across Yorkshire and Humberside including East Riding. There are 2 inpatient wards totalling 32 beds, an outpatient department and theatre on site.

It is the first regional spinal injury centre implanting and follow-up for two distinctly different intrathecal drug delivery devices for pain and spasticity management. You will be part of a medical team comprising of three Consultants in Spinal Injuries and one Specialty Registrar. This is a replacement role at this Trust and the post holder will work alongside the senior consultant team in supporting establishing the care pathway as appropriate.

The fellowship offers excellent training opportunities for interested candidates. The successful appointee/s will work within the regional tertiary spinal injury centre a multi-disciplinary focus. The fellowship will address all aspects of Spinal Cord medicine and management of long-term conditions as set out in the attached curriculum document. The post would be suitable for individuals interested in pursuing a career in spinal cord medicine or for those who wish to gain additional experience in the comprehensive management of people with spinal cord injury. The postholder might also have an opportunity to work in the neurorehabilitation service within the trust.

The post would suit those with a background training or experience in Rehabilitation Medicine that includes Spinal Cord Medicine and or Neuro Rehabilitation. The post would also be attractive to those with a general practice background wishing to develop a special interest in management of long-term conditions. The fellows will gain experience in the functioning of the national spinal cord injury pathway and the major trauma pathway. The candidate will also have opportunity to get involved in quality improvement initiatives.

Main duties

The Main Duties Of The Post Will Include

• Provide specialist clinical care to spinal cord inpatients and outpatients
• Work closely with acute spinal teams to support patient flow and continuity of care, completing spinal cord rehab ward rounds
• Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and goal-setting processes
• Contribute to clinical governance, audit, and service improvement work
• Provide advice and support to community rehabilitation services
• Multidisciplinary working to support recovery and rehabilitation
• Leadership opportunity providing supervision to junior doctors and medical students.
• Contribution to service development, governance, and quality improvement
• Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education
• Act as a clinical and/or educational supervisor where appropriate
• Engage in audit, quality improvement, and service evaluation
• Participate in research activities where aligned with service priorities

Essential Person Specification Requirements

To meet the requirements of this role, applicants must demonstrate the following essential criteria:

• Currently holds full GMC Registration with licence to practise OR is eligible for the same and obtained this prior to commencement
• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
• Either of the following: ATLS, ALS, BLS, APLS or PALS certification
• Experience of working in specialist spinal injuries rehabilitation, stroke or neurorehabilitation for a minimum of 1 year.
• Eligibility to work in the UK
• Have evidence of achievement of foundation competences from a UKFPO-affiliated foundation programme or equivalent, by time of application in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice
• Experience of being able to assess and manage people with Spinal cord injuries

Experience of being able to assess and manage people with Spinal cord injuries

Experience of working with a multi-disciplinary team in planning rehabilitation goals for people with spinal injuries

Have sufficient experience working in medical specialties (not including foundation level experience) by the advertised post start date. This can be via either:

Training completed in: UK Internal Medicine Stage 1 Training

UK ACCS (Internal Medicine)

UK Broad Based Training (medicine route)

A standalone UK IMY3 programme (following completion of UK core medical training/ACCS (acute medicine))

JRCPTB internationally level 3 accredited equivalent Internal Medicine Stage 1 Training programme

Ability to critically assess published research and incorporate it into clinical practice where appropriate

Experience and commitment in teaching medical students and junior doctors

Demonstrates intelligent and analytical approach to problem solving.

Possesses good communication skills
