Job Description Summary

We are seeking a Product Engineer to join our Cardiff-based engineering team which is Perm or FTE with BGTS reporting to the Lead Developer.

You will work closely with business stakeholders, product owners and fellow engineers to understand business challenges, shape solutions and deliver high-quality digital products used by thousands of learners and driving instructors across the UK.

You will take ownership of features from discovery through to production, delivering solutions that create value for both the business and our customers.

Our products are built using technologies including TypeScript, React, Node.js, GraphQL, Flutter and AWS. Experience with these technologies is beneficial, but we are primarily seeking engineers with strong problem-solving skills, sound engineering judgement and the ability to learn quickly. We embrace AI-assisted software development and expect engineers to use these tools responsibly while maintaining high standards of quality, security and maintainability.

1. Work with business stakeholders and product owners to understand business challenges and identify opportunities for improvement.

2. Take ownership of features from discovery through implementation, deployment and production support.

3. Translate business requirements into practical, scalable and maintainable technical solutions.

4. Deliver high-quality software that balances customer value, engineering quality and operational stability.

5. Collaborate effectively with engineers, testers, designers and business stakeholders.

6. Use modern engineering practices and AI-assisted development tools responsibly while maintaining accountability for the quality of delivered solutions.

7. Contribute to the continuous improvement of products, engineering practices, tooling and your own professional development.

8. Help evolve AI-enabled software development practices and ways of working within the team.

Although our technology stack includes TypeScript, React, Node.js, GraphQL, Flutter and AWS, we recognise that strong engineers come from many technical backgrounds. We are more interested in your ability to learn quickly, communicate effectively and deliver high-quality solutions than experience with any specific technology.

Technical Experience

· Experience developing modern web applications using one or more contemporary programming languages or frameworks.

· Experience designing and developing REST or GraphQL APIs.

· Experience working with relational and/or NoSQL databases.

· Experience working with cloud platforms and modern deployment practices.

· Experience writing maintainable, well-tested and secure software.

· Experience using Git and collaborative development workflows.

· Understanding of modern software engineering practices, including automated testing, code review and continuous integration.

Desirable Experience

Experience in any of the following would be advantageous but is not essential:

· TypeScript and JavaScript.

· React or other modern front-end frameworks.

· Node.js.

· GraphQL and Apollo.

· AWS services such as Lambda, SQS, CloudFormation or similar.

· Mobile application development using Flutter or React Native.

· SQL Server and database design.

· Automated testing using frameworks such as Jest.

· Infrastructure as Code and DevOps practices.

· Experience working within Agile product teams.

· Experience introducing AI-assisted engineering tools or workflows that improve software delivery and team productivity.
