The Role
We have an exciting new opportunity for a Senior Backend Software Engineer - Identity & Authentication to join Robert Walters as a Consultant.

As a Consultant, you will benefit from permanent employment with Robert Walters and will be deployed on an assignment within our clients' organisations, in return we will provide you with the opportunity to develop your skills with ongoing training and professional support.

What You'll Do

• Design, build and evolve backend services that support client authentication and multi-factor authentication (MFA), ensuring robust security and reliability.
• Develop and maintain RESTful APIs using NestJS and TypeScript, following best practices for scalability, performance and maintainability.
• Integrate with third-party identity and MFA platforms (e.g. Transmit Security, Auth0) to deliver seamless, secure authentication experiences.
• Deploy and operate services on AWS using Infrastructure as Code (CloudFormation/CloudBlocks), managing provisioning, configuration and environment consistency.
• Run and maintain production services, including database migrations, updates and oversight of vendor-hosted software running in AWS.
• Write automated tests, improve test coverage and quality, and participate in CI/CD pipelines, deployments and operational procedures to ensure reliable releases.

What You Bring

• Proficient in TypeScript with strong backend engineering fundamentals using Node.js and NestJS (or Express).
• Proven experience designing, building and maintaining RESTful APIs in a TypeScript/Node.js environment.
• Solid understanding of authentication and authorisation protocols, including OAuth 2.0 and JWT.
• Hands-on experience with AWS services such as ECS, Lambda, CloudFront, S3 and Secrets Manager.
• Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code tools, ideally CloudFormation or CDK/Terraform.
• Strong Git practices and CI/CD experience using GitHub Actions or equivalent platforms.
• Experience writing comprehensive unit and integration tests with Jest.
