- Be part of a specialist team performing, analysing and reporting results of physiological measurements on children, requiring a considerable degree of accuracy, responsibility and autonomy.
- To be able to perform and analyse with minimal supervision the physiological tests listed under ‘main tasks & responsibilities’ whilst maintaining excellent standards of patient care and clinical practice.
- To assist lead physiological scientist in the day-to-day running of the service.
- To assist lead physiological scientist in setting up & developing fledgling areas of the service e.g. cardiopulmonary exercise testing & home ventilator remote monitoring.
- To assist with lectures and training of staff within the multidisciplinary team & trainees.
- To demonstrate care and respect at all times, for both patients & colleagues.
- To work towards STP equivalence once sufficient experience is obtained, with the help of lead physiological scientist.
- To work in accordance with general Trust, occupational and professional guidelines.
Main Tasks & Responsibilities
Patient Care (both direct and indirect)
- To undertake the following procedures listed under physiological tests, obtaining accurate results, following department protocols with minimal supervision.
Physiological Tests
- Cardiorespiratory polygraphy sleep studies
- Transcutaneous PCO2 monitoring & pulse oximetry
- Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET)
- Multiple breath washout / Lung clearance index test (LCI)
- Spirometry with bronchodilator reversibility
- To score paediatric cardiorespiratory polygraphy sleep studies, generate the reports and present the findings to the respiratory MDT, following department and national guidelines.
- - To assist in analysing the data from cardiopulmonary exercise tests, generate the reports and assist in presenting the findings to the respiratory MDT.
- To assist in the management of patients on non-invasive respiratory support. - To explain tests clearly to children in an age-appropriate manner to enable them to perform physiological tests, working with the child, family and multidisciplinary team members to obtain accurate results and achieve best possible outcomes. - To perform all relevant quality control and calibration procedures within the department including the performance of personal biological control procedures.
