The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for the appointment of a permanent Specialist Biomedical Scientist within the North Glasgow Haematology & Blood Transfusion Department. This role sits within a large, collaborative and forward‑thinking service delivering high-quality diagnostic haematology and blood transfusion services across multiple hospital sites. You will play a key role in supporting safe, timely and effective patient care through specialist analysis, interpretation and advice. Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

• North Glasgow Haematology & Blood Transfusion Department
• The successful applicant will be required, after suitable training, to work a shift pattern across 7 days
• Candidates without a specialist portfolio may be considered for appointment under AFC Annex 21 terms and conditions.
• Across all 3 sites of North Glasgow - Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Gartnavel General Hospital and Stobhill ACH
  
  

Key Responsibilities

• Undertake routine and specialist haematology and blood transfusion investigations using complex analytical and automated systems
• Interpret validate authorise and report results using professional judgement and clinical knowledge

Provide advice to clinicians and healthcare staff on test selection result interpretation and urgency of investigations

Supervise train and support trainee biomedical scientists and support staff within the laboratory

Perform first line maintenance quality control and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment and reagents

Participate in quality assurance audit service development and research activities

Contribute to the 24 hour shift service including weekends and public holidays as required

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

• Must have an appropriate BSc Honours degree or equivalent, acceptable for Health Professions Council Registration
• Must be registered to practice as a Biomedical Scientist with the HCPC
• Must have post-registration experience in a Haematology/Transfusion laboratory
• Candidates should hold a Specialist Certificate in Haematology/Hospital Transfusion Practice but consideration will be given to candidates who have not yet obtained the certificate, and they will be employed on Annexe 21 of Band 6
