Job Title: PICU Practice Educator
Contract Type: Fixed Term - 12 months
Purpose for Fixed Term: Secondment
Main duties of the job
This is an exciting opportunity to join our team in the PICU education team as a Band 6 practice educator for a fixed term secondment of 12 months.
The aim of this secondment is to support a large cohort of new starters within PICU to develop skills and knowledge to safely care for our patients, as well a supporting those already working with us to build on their skills and knowledge. Within this role you will work closely with the existing PICU education team as well as the wider child health education team.
Your manger will be the Education lead for PICU Alison Meadows. The job is a 37.5 hr role (1 WTE) but we would consider a job share. Please be aware there is minimal unsocial hours work within this role.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
In this role, your key responsibilities will include to use your expertise as a post course PICU nurse to make a real difference to learners, colleagues and ultimately the quality of care we provide to our patients and service users. You’ll play a key role in creating safe, inclusive and supportive learning environments, delivering innovative education and training, and coaching, mentoring and assessing learners across PICU.
Working collaboratively with clinical and non-clinical teams and other education providers within UHS, you’ll help ensure learners have the skills, knowledge and confidence to thrive in practice. With a strong focus on quality improvement, innovation and professional development, you’ll also have the opportunity to shape how education is viewed on PICU of and support a culture where everyone can learn, grow and be a positive agent for change.

A fully completed Level 3 PICU course is essential (applicants without will not be shortlisted)
You need to be skilled and feel comfortable taking any patient in PICU and being able to support staff learning in these situations.
Have a flexible attitude to work as we often have to change plans to suit the demands of the unit.
Be able to clearly demonstrate involvement in staff development

Key Responsibilities Include
Delivering education using a range of approaches including face-to-face teaching, simulation, coaching and technology-enhanced learning.
Supporting registered staff, students, and apprentices within PICU
Assessing and monitoring learner progress and supporting the development of competence and confidence in practice.
Supporting the planning, coordination and delivery of education within PICU along with education team.
Supporting educational governance, quality improvement and evaluation activities.
Contributing to the continuous development of the PICU team and wider child health care group where needed.
Working Patterns
There is minimal unsocial hours associated with this role with hours worked 07:45- 20:15 Monday to Saturday.
We would be happy to consider this role as 2 x 0.5 WTE if staff wanted to keep some clinical hours whilst working within the education team.
Person specification
Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience
Essential criteria
- Professional requirements e.g. Registered Nurse or Registered Professional or Non-registered support worker etc.
- Professional knowledge acquired through degree education or equivalent experience
- Mentoring / coaching / education qualification to postgraduate diploma level or equivalent evidence of supporting learners in practice.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development
- Significant experience within relevant field
- Experience of educating others in a formal or informal setting
- Broad awareness of Trust initiatives/pressures
Desirable criteria
- Education at a master's degree level
- Further education at a master's degree level in relevant practice area
- Leadership qualification or significant equivalent experience
- Previous Band 6 experience
- Further evidence of speciality competence
