Connect to your Industry

Do you want to help deliver some of the UK’s largest and most ambitious programmes, using technology to deliver essential services to the nation, that are secure, resilient and ready for the future?

At Deloitte, our engineers build the digital foundations behind some of the most complex systems in government – from critical infrastructure to advanced data platforms.

We don’t just test software – we engineer quality into products that matter. As an SDET here, you’ll combine strong software development skills with deep quality engineering expertise: contributing production-quality code, designing scalable automation and tooling, improving testability, and helping teams deliver secure, resilient services with confidence.

We’re growing rapidly across our Government and Public Sector. If you already hold active UK SC clearance or are eligible (5+ years UK residency) and want to design, build, and test solutions that make an impact across the nation, we’d love to meet you.

Connect to your opportunity

This team is focused on the technical delivery of new solutions that solve complex challenges for clients. Join us to drive innovation and technology forward, collaborating with cross-functional teams and using cutting-edge tools. Offering excellent development opportunities, you will have the chance to hone your technical craft, gain new skills, and complete qualifications and certificates. This is your chance to make a real impact.

We’re looking for software engineers who are passionate about quality. As an SDET, you’ll apply sound engineering principles to build software, automation frameworks, test infrastructure and developer tooling that improve products throughout the delivery lifecycle. You’ll help clients deliver faster and with confidence across some of the largest and most technically ambitious programmes in the country.

You’ll work as part of a cross-functional engineering team alongside software engineers, DevOps engineers and business analysts – designing and implementing maintainable solutions, reviewing code, shaping architecture for testability, and building scalable automation that works in the real world. You’ll be trusted to make technical decisions, explore and implement new tools, and influence how our teams engineer quality from design through to production.

You might find yourself:

• Designing, developing and maintaining production-quality software, test infrastructure and reusable engineering tools for APIs, microservices and front-end applications.
• Applying software engineering principles such as modular design, clean code, design patterns, code review and appropriate automated testing.
• Designing scalable automation frameworks and libraries that improve testability, developer feedback and delivery speed.
• Embedding automated quality checks in CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Azure DevOps, Jenkins or GitHub Actions.

Your work will have national impact – the software and engineering capabilities you help build support services used by millions of people every day, often in mission-critical environments.

Connect to your skills and professional experience

You’re curious, collaborative, and hands-on.

You care about clean, secure, maintainable and testable code. You understand how sound design, reliable automation and rapid feedback work together to create quality. You take initiative and are pragmatic – you know when to automate, when to refactor, when exploratory testing adds value, and when a solution is ready to ship. You bring clarity to complexity through strong communication and enjoy helping teams improve their engineering practices.

Essentials

• Active UK SC clearance or eligible (Proven years UK residency).
• Strong software development skills in at least one of Java, C#, Python or JavaScript/TypeScript, with experience producing readable, maintainable and well-structured code.
• A practical understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including object-oriented or functional design, SOLID principles, design patterns, refactoring and code review.
• Experience developing software, automation frameworks, libraries or engineering tools for APIs, web applications, mobile applications or distributed services.

Desirables

• Practical experience of CI/CD pipelines and incorporating build, test and quality controls into delivery workflows.
• Understanding of API design, microservices, asynchronous integration and container-based architectures.
• Experience with cloud technologies such as AWS, Azure or GCP.
• Experience using observability tooling, logs and metrics to understand system behaviour and diagnose failures.
• Exposure to infrastructure as code or container orchestration tools such as Docker, Kubernetes or Terraform.
• Knowledge of performance, security or accessibility engineering and associated tooling.
• Experience testing SaaS platforms such as SAP, Oracle, Salesforce or ServiceNow.
• Experience or interest in working with Government and Public Sector organisations.
• Contributions to open-source projects or developer communities.
• Relevant software engineering, cloud or testing certifications, including ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level or ISTQB Certified Tester – Testing with Generative AI.
