The Role
We are seeking a Senior Java Developer to join our client, a major US Investment Bank, working in their Java Platform Engineering team in Glasgow on an initial 12 month contract.
This is an opportunity to contribute to the development of reusable Java frameworks, libraries and platform services used across a large-scale technology environment. You will help drive Java modernisation, improve developer productivity and shape technical standards across the organisation.
The role is suited to an experienced Java developer with strong knowledge of distributed systems, concurrency and Spring Boot, who enjoys working on complex technical challenges and platform engineering.
What You'll Do
- Define technical standards and best practices for Java-based distributed systems.
- Design, develop and support reusable Java libraries, frameworks and platform services.
- Contribute to Java modernisation and platform engineering initiatives.
- Work with application teams to improve platform guidance and developer enablement.
- Lead technical investigations, proof-of-concepts and technology evaluations.
- Develop technical documentation, reference architectures and engineering standards.
- Support performance, resilience and scalability improvements across Java applications.
- Explore agentic coding tools to support prototyping, testing, documentation and developer productivity.
Key Skills & Experience
- Strong commercial experience with Java development and JVM internals.
- Excellent understanding of concurrent and multithreaded programming.
- Strong knowledge of distributed systems and microservice architectures.
- Extensive experience with Spring and Spring Boot.
Desirable Skills
- Kubernetes and container platforms.
- Cloud-native application architectures.
- Performance engineering and JVM tuning.
- API gateways and service mesh technologies.
- OpenAPI, gRPC or event-driven architectures.
- Experience with C++, Python or other platform languages.
- CI/CD and developer tooling.
- Experience contributing to open-source software.
