Anyone can use the standard rate, but the pay clears it only if the Home Office classes the job as SOC 2440. We think SOC 1137 is more likely, and the pay is too low for that code. If you are a new entrant or a PhD holder, you can use a lower rate, and the pay clears the new entrant rate for SOC 1137. On the jobs board, Standard and the new entrant rate both show roles like this as Possible at most. The advertised pay goes up to £75,439.
This could also be SOC 2431 (Management consultants and business analysts). We read the code off the advert, so it is our best guess, not the employer's.
New graduate or PhD holder? Pick one of the lower rates.
| Occupation code | New entrant 70% of going rate | STEM PhD 80% of going rate | Relevant PhD 90% of going rate | Standard rate 100% of going rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
1137 Information technology directors Most likely code | £60,200 Clears | £68,800 Clears | £77,400 Misses | £86,000 Misses |
2440 Business and financial project management professionals Also possible | £39,500 Clears | £45,200 Clears | £50,800 Clears | £56,500 Clears |
2431 Management consultants and business analysts Also possible | £35,100 Clears | £40,200 Clears | £45,200 Clears | £50,200 Clears |
We use the lowest threshold across the plausible codes. Likelihood is Possible at most when the pay clears only a lower rate, or only under a less likely code. A mark is for the top of the advertised pay. How the Home Office picks the code

About the Role
The Head of AI and Automation in Professional Services will provide strategic leadership for the use of artificial intelligence and workflow automation within the Professional Services Programme, a three-year University-wide transformation programme. You will shape the operating model, governance and delivery approach that takes promising ideas from definition and experimentation through to sustainable services, ensuring investment is focused on opportunities capable of delivering significant value at scale.
Working across professional functions, technology teams and governance structures, you will help senior leaders understand what AI and automation can achieve in their areas and translate institutional priorities into a focused roadmap. You will lead a team currently comprising five members, build productive relationships with internal specialists and external suppliers, and ensure solutions are developed with clear ownership, appropriate governance and a strong focus on adoption, benefits and user needs.
This is a distinctive opportunity to influence how an internationally renowned university approaches AI and automation at an important stage in its digital transformation. Your leadership will help the University consolidate demand, reduce duplication, develop organisational capability and establish sustainable ways of turning rapidly evolving technologies into measurable improvements for academics, students and staff.
As this role supports ongoing strategic priorities, we are keen to appoint someone who can begin contributing within a relatively short timeframe and would welcome applications from candidates who are available to start promptly.
