Overview
We are looking for a highly skilled Linux Automation Engineer to join a leading investment banking organisation on a long-term contract basis. This is an excellent opportunity to work within a large-scale enterprise environment, supporting critical infrastructure and driving automation across complex Linux-based platforms.
This role requires an engineer with exceptional Linux administration, Python scripting, and Ansible automation expertise. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in managing enterprise-scale Linux environments, automating operational processes, and troubleshooting complex infrastructure issues in fast-paced production environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Administer, support, and maintain large-scale Linux/Unix environments.
- Develop and maintain automation solutions using Python, Ansible, Bash, and Perl.
- Design and implement infrastructure automation to improve efficiency, reliability, and scalability.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues across systems, applications, and network infrastructure.
- Build and enhance automation frameworks for system deployment, configuration management, and operational support.
- Support CI/CD processes and integrate automation into development and release workflows.
- Work closely with infrastructure, networking, security, and application teams to deliver technical solutions.
- Participate in incident response, root cause analysis, and problem management activities.
- Ensure systems adhere to security, compliance, and operational standards expected within a regulated financial environment.
- Maintain technical documentation and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Essential Skills & Experience
Linux Administration
- Expert-level Linux/Unix administration experience.
- Strong experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) or similar enterprise Linux distributions.
- Deep understanding of operating systems, performance tuning, patching, system hardening, and troubleshooting.
- Strong command-line expertise and ability to diagnose issues within complex environments.
Python & Automation
- Advanced Python scripting and automation experience.
- Proven ability to build automation tools, operational scripts, and infrastructure solutions.
- Experience developing production-quality code and maintaining automation frameworks.
- Comfortable working with Bash, Perl, or Korn Shell where required.
Ansible
- Extensive hands-on experience delivering infrastructure automation using Ansible.
- Experience creating and maintaining playbooks, roles, and automation pipelines.
- Strong understanding of configuration management and Infrastructure-as-Code principles.
- Experience automating large-scale server estates and operational processes.
Technical Requirements
- Strong Linux/Unix system administration experience.
- Advanced Python scripting skills.
- Expert-level Ansible automation experience.
- Git-based development workflows and version control.
- CI/CD tooling such as Jenkins.
- Infrastructure-as-Code exposure including Terraform.
- Experience supporting business-critical production applications.
- Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills.
Networking Knowledge
A solid understanding of networking fundamentals is essential, including:
- TCP/IP
- HTTP/HTTPS
- SSL/TLS
- DNS
- Load Balancing
- Network troubleshooting and diagnostics
